Part III: Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost

The History of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament:

Part III: The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost

This week’s study is a short review of the role of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.
Have you ever wondered about your natural abilities, talents, or skills?  Where did they come from?  Why is one person good with technology, another good at crafts, another good at cooking, another good at business planning, budgeting, or excellent at deep sea diving or a clothes designer, fragrance maker, or someone excellent at marketing, etc.   Where did a compassionate heart come from:  helping the homeless, ministering to the needs of people in prison, great teachers at every level of education, etc?   Your “natural abilities” or “learned skills” come from the Spirit of God.
Study the scriptures below.  Read the entire chapters.  Look very carefully at everything the Spirit of God does.  He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.  The Spirit of God, which is the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost, was in the beginning and he is present today: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.  He desires to dwell within you on a permanent basis.  He has already blessed each of you will abilities, talents, and skills. But, there is so much more of him to receive.
History of the Holy Spirit
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Where was the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament?
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters in the beginning as he began creating creation.
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?
Even Pharaoh recognized the Spirit of God. Do you recognize the Spirit of God upon someone?

Exodus 31:2-4 (KJV)

See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,…

Exodus 35:30-32 (KJV)

30 And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the Lord hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah;
31 And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
32 And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,…
The Spirit of God is the reason people have wisdom, understanding, and knowledge in workmanship.  Whatever your talents, they are God given by the Spirit of God, which is the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit.  God created us and gave us gifts, talents, and abilities.

Numbers 11:24-26 (KJV)

24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the Lord, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.
25 And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.

Numbers 24:1-3 (KJV)

24 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

Enchantments: witchcraft, palm readers, card readers, etc. are never the way.  The Spirit of God will always minister truth to you. He will minister to your through his word, prophesy, and speaking to you one on one.

Numbers 27:17-19 (KJV)

17 Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd.
18 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;****
19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.

The Spirit came upon Joshua the son of Nun, just as the Spirit came upon the Apostles.

Judges 3:9-11 (KJV)

And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
10 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Judges 6:33-35 (KJV)

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
34 But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

Judges 11:28-30 (KJV)

28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands

The Spirit of the Lord came upon all of the Leaders of God’s people.  All of those, whom God chose, the Spirit of the Lord came upon them.  Today, if you are a leader of God’s people you need the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit.

Samson and the Spirit of the Lord :

Judges 13:24-25 (KJV)

24 And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.
25 And the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol

Judges 14:5-7 (KJV)

Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.
And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well

Judges 14:18-20 (KJV)

18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? and he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.
20 But Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

Samson was one of the Judges of God’s people: Israel.  The Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him giving him incredible strength to judge Israel’s enemies.

The Holy Spirit has a personality and emotions:

He expresses anger:

1 Samuel 11:5-7 (KJV)

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

The Spirit of the Lord (Holy Spirit) has a personality; he can express emotions such as anger.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
The Spirit of the Lord came upon David when God anointed him as King.  David has not begun to reign as king; he was only anointed as King.
But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

Psalm 51:10-12 (KJV)

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Read the history of Saul. Saul was once anointed by God, after Saul disobeyed God, The Spirit of the Lord Departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord trouble him. People, who think the Spirit of God cannot depart from them, read the history of Saul.
After David sinned, he prayed, asking God to not take his spirit from him. David realized the importance of having God’s Holy Spirit. Read the entire Psalm 51, this is an amazing humble prayer to God by King David.

2 Samuel 23:1-3 (KJV)

23 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said,
The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

The Holy Spirit gives instruction.

**1 Chronicles 28:11-13 (KJV)

11 Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat,
12 And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things:
13 Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and for all the vessels of service in the house of the Lord.

The spirit of the lord gives instructions for the work of the service of the house of the lord.

2 Chronicles 20:13-15 (KJV)

13 And all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the Lord in the midst of the congregation;
15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

The Holy Spirit is your comforter; he can show up where you are and give you encouragement and assurance.  He reminds you of who God is, where you confidence should be.

And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.
The Holy Spirit of God brings correction.

***Nehemiah 9:19-21 (KJV)

19 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.
21 Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.

The Holy Spirit of God is to instruct you in the ways of righteousness.
I pray in this Introductory, “Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit Part III”, that you understand the history of the Holy Spirit.  There are many other scriptures in the Old Testament pertaining to the Holy Spirit.  There are also many cross-references to the New Testament.  As you study this subject in your private study time, write out your cross-references.  Define his purpose in each of the scriptures and see how it applies to your life. God is the same, yesterday, and forever. He changes not.  He that has not the Spirit of God is none of his.  You must be born of the water and the Spirit.
