The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost
Part II: The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost
Speaking in Tongues
Is this
in the Bible? Are tongues for
today? What did Jesus say about speaking
in tongues? What did Paul say about
speaking in tongues? What is the purpose
of speaking in tongues?
Before these questions are answered, let’s establish what
tongues are not.
- Speaking in tongues is not learning a humanly spoken language, such as: Hebrew, Latin, Greek, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Balochi, etc. There are approximately 6,500 languages spoken in the world today. You do not learn how to speak in tongues. The spirit gives you utterance. I Corinthians 14:14 Apostle Paul, being fluent in Hebrew and Greek, said when he prays in the Spirit his understanding is unfruitful. Remember it is an unknown tongue or called a new tongue. Tongues are a spiritual language.
- Tongues are not just for people that attend a Pentecostal Church. Tongues are for the believer according to Jesus. (Remember we learned in the “Baptism of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit” bible study, that Pentecost was a holiday, not a denomination. Just like John the Baptist was a baptizer, not a Baptist denomination.)
The churches in the New
Testament were named after their cities and some churches had no name but were
located in someone’s home or near a river, common gathering place.
What are tongues?
Tongues are a
spiritual language; a language that the Holy Spirit gives you the utterance.
You can pray in the spirit and sing in the spirit.
Speaking in Tongues
- Is this in the Bible?

- What did Paul say about speaking in tongues?
- What is the purpose of speaking in tongues?
Recap:
Mark 16: 15- 18 One of the signs
that follow a believer is tongues: verse 17.
(Since Jesus is speaking in these
scriptures, how can anyone dispute speaking with new tongues? Jesus clearly states these signs for the
believer, so if you are a believer today, it applies to you as a believer just
as it applied to those Jesus was speaking too: The eleven.)
Previously, we learned Jesus
made a promise to baptize us with the Holy Ghost Acts 1:-8, and we would
receive power after the Holy Ghost comes upon us and we will be witnesses of
Jesus in all the world. When people
received the Holy Ghost, they speak in tongues as the Spirit gave them
utterance. That’s how I speak in
tongues: as the Spirit gives me utterance.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 10:45-47 (KJV)
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Acts 19:5-7 (KJV)
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
What is the purpose of speaking in tongues?
1 Corinthians 14 (KJV)
2 For
he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not
unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But
he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and
comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
14 For
if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth,
but my understanding is unfruitful.
15 What
is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and
I will pray with the understanding also: I will
sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Purpose of Speaking in Tongues:
- Speaking in tongues is speaking to God (no one understands you, because it’s as the spirit gives you utterance: no one teaches you tongues)
- The Spirit speaks mysteries
- Speaking in tongues you edify yourself
- Speaking in tongues, your spirit, which is the Holy Ghost, prays
- Pray in the Spirit (tongues); Sing in the Spirit (tongues)
Edify:
verb (used with object), edified, edifying.
- to instruct or benefit, especially morally or spiritually; uplift:
- (transitive) to improve the morality, intellect, etc, of, esp by instruction
Word
Origin and History for edify Expand
- mid-14c., "to build, construct," also, in figurative use, "to build up morally or in faith," from Old French edefiier "build, install, teach, instruct (morally)," from Latin aedificare "to build, construct," in Late Latin "improve spiritually, instruct"
Remember from our previous study of, “The
Baptism of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit” Jesus told us his purpose of giving
us the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.
Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit:
- The Holy Ghost is our Comforter
- The Comforter is Jesus
- The Holy Ghost dwells in you *
- The Comforter is a Teacher
- The Comforter is our Helper
- The Comforter is Power
- The Comforter is a Spirit
The Holy Ghost
language, which is speaking in unknown tongues, edifies us. The Holy Ghost is our Comforter, he is the
Spirit of Truth, he is our helper. Comforter in the Greek is parakletos which literally means “one called alongside to help.” He is a gift from Jesus to
help you in your Christian walk. He is the power that we are endued with, he is
the Spirit of the most high God, he is our teacher, he has been sent by the
Father to dwell in us. Without him, we
cannot live this Christian life. Without
him we do not belong to him.
As we pray in the Spirit, we receive instruction from the Holy
Spirit, which edifies us spiritually and morally. He uplifts us, because he is our Comforter. He as our teacher, instructs us in the ways
of righteousness.
Study the Scriptures below:
And Jesus being full of the
Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the
wilderness,
For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the
same hour what ye ought to say.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,
whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things
to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Until the day in which he was taken up, after
that he through the Holy Ghost
had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
But ye shall receive power,
after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye
shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and
Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of
the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost,
were multiplied.
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the
region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the
Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
Which things also we speak, not in the words
which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual
things with spiritual.
What? know ye not that your body
is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in
you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Because the Holy Ghost is my comforter and I speak in tongues as the Spirit give me utterance, I build myself up on my most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost (unknown tongues): he gives me strength and comforter in the most difficult life challenges. When people have lied on you, tried their best to hurt you, cast your name out as evil, done you wrong, when you have only done right by them. When you lose someone or something you love or need: death of a loved one, friendship fails, betrayal of one you trust, job loss, etc. The Holy Ghost builds you up spiritually and morally. He gives you power to forgive those that have sinned against you. He alone is who you need to help you to endure hardness as a good soldier of the Lord. Without him you can do nothing.
I am a living testimony of the Power of the Holy Ghost being demonstrated in my life that I am becoming Christlike, bringing forth fruit and being able to endure to the end, just like Jesus. Thank you Jesus for the Power of the Holy Ghost!
Jude 1:19-21 (KJV)
19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
21 Keep yourselves in in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
As you go through this bible study this week, I
encourage you to examine yourself according to the word of God. Search the scriptures diligently, pertaining
to the Holy Ghost and tongues.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your
own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you,
except ye be reprobates?
Search the scriptures; for in them ye
think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of
me.
Thank
you Lord Jesus for sending the Comforter into our lives, giving us the power to
become sons and daughters of God. Help
us to surrender to the Holy Spirit allowing him to lead and guide us into all
truth and righteousness, so that our heavenly Father will be pleased with
us. Help us to pray in the Spirit as the
Holy Ghost gives us utterance, building ourselves up in our most holy faith.
Amen.
