The Purpose of the Holy Spirit: Introduction
The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost
Introduction: The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost
Sometimes people
(Christians and Non-Christians) think living the Christian life is not
possible. When you read the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels:
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, you receive instructions on how a Christian is
to live their life. (Christian Life
Instructions are also in the Entire Bible)
So, you might be
the one to say, it’s too hard to love my neighbor when they have done me wrong.
It’s too hard to forgive my husband when he cheated on me with my best
friend. It’s too hard to have compassion
on the poor. It’s too hard to not lust
at the beautiful women with their shapely bodies. You might even be one who secretly is
prejudice in your heart against a particular race of people. You might also say, “I can’t get over the
death of my loved one”. I can’t kick
this drug habit. I can’t stop being a hypocrite at church. I can’t stop looking
at pornography. I can’t stop being envious of my co-worker. I can’t stop getting drunk. I can’t stop hating others in my heart. I can’t get rid of my anger and temper. And
the list can go on and on.
You’re right; no one can live the Christian life, on their
own. That’s why we need to receive the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost. He is our
Comforter. He gives us Power to become Sons and Daughters of God. He
prays for us. He is the third person
of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Without the Holy Ghost, we can’t
serve God. Review the previous bible
study, “The Baptism of the Holy
Ghost/Holy Spirit”.
Regardless of
how much you attend church or not, serve in ministry, say you believe in Jesus,
or how good of a moral person you are, if you do not receive the Holy
Ghost/Holy Spirit, you do not have power to become a son or daughter of God nor
do you belong to Jesus Christ, he is not your Lord and Savior. But he can be
your Lord and Savior, if you receive his Spirit.
Romans 8:9
(KJV)
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so
be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Jesus
went back to heaven for you to be able to receive his Spirit to dwell within
you.
Don’t lose sight of the purpose of the Holy Spirit; he is our comforter, he is the Spirit of Truth, plus
so much more. Remember from our
previous bible study, “The Baptism of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit”, Comforter
in the Greek is parakletos which
literally means “one called alongside
to help.” He is a gift from Jesus to help you in your Christian walk.
The Holy Ghost comes to give us:
- Commandments
- Power
- Enable us to be witnesses of Jesus
- To guide us in all truth
Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit:
- The Holy Ghost is our Comforter
- The Comforter is Jesus
- The Holy Ghost dwells in you *
- The Comforter is a Teacher
- The Comforter is our Helper
- The Comforter is Power
- The Comforter is a Spirit
We are to:
- Walk in the Spirit
- Pray in the Spirit
- Sing in the Spirit
- Obey the Spirit
- Worship in the Spirit
In our previous bible study, “The
Baptism of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit”, we learned:
- Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11-12)
- Repentance must be made to receive the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38-39)
- We also looked at the prophesy of Joel 2:28-29 fulfilled in Acts 2:1-4, promised by Jesus in Acts 1:4-7.
Matthew 3:11-12 King James Version (KJV)
11 I indeed
baptize you with water unto repentance. But he that cometh after me is mightier
than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he
shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and
with fire:
12 Whose fan is in
his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather
his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up
the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Acts 2:38-39 King James Version (KJV)
38 Then Peter said
unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one
of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise
is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many
as the Lord our God shall call.
Joel 2:28-29
King James Version (KJV)
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your
sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your
young men shall see visions:
29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those
days will I pour out my spirit.
Acts 1:4-7 King James Version (KJV)
4 And, being
assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from
Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,
which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly
baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with
the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they
therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at
this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto
them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath
put in his own power.
Acts 2:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
2 1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place.
2 And suddenly
there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all
the house where they were sitting.
3 And there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of
them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Remember Jesus said one of the signs of a believer is speaking with new tongues. We will learn about the purpose of speaking in tongues.
Mark 16:15-18 King James Version (KJV)
15 And he said
unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe;
In my name (Jesus)
shall they cast out devils; they shall speak
with new tongues;
18 They shall take
up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Repentance is the first step to receiving the promise of the Father, which is the Holy Ghost and for the remission of our sins, this is why Jesus suffered for us, shed his blood for us, died for us, and rose on the third day for us. Jesus commanded us in Luke 24, to preach this in his name among all nations and be a witness. Jesus promised to send the Promise of the Father, which he said, “we will be endued with power from on high”.
Jesus and John the Baptist both came preaching repentance Matthew 3:1-12, Matthew 4:17. Jesus commands us in Luke 24 to preach repentance and remission of sins and Peter fulfills this command in Acts 2:38-39, which we are to fulfill today.
Short definitions:
Repentance: Regret or sorrow
for sins which results in a change.
Endued: clothed with God’s
enabling power.
Believe: is to believe unto
righteousness (unto doing
what is right in God’s sight)
For those that say they believe, but have not received the Holy Ghost, you are just like the devils that believe and tremble. Just to say you believe is not enough, when you believe it is evident by you doing something. When you believe the words that God speaks you obey his word, that’s true believing.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest
well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
So, you say, well I do believe, but I just can’t seem to do right or I do right for a while then I mess up. That’s exactly why you need the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth to dwell within you enduing you with power to walk in the Spirit after you’ve been born of the Spirit.
Students of the Word:
If you have not read the Gospel of John and the Book of Acts, please read them before our next class.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your precious Son, Jesus. We thank you for sending him to be our sacrificial lamb, which shed his blood for the remission and repentance of our sins. We thank you Lord for all that he suffered on our behalf. Lord we thank you for being faithful to your word that was spoken of by Joel in the Holy Scriptures and fulfilled after Jesus ascended in to heaven. Lord God, your word is true and you are faithful. Thank you for the promise of the comforter and the power you give us when we receive your Holy Spirit. Amen.
