The
Baptism of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit - Part II
The Baptism of the Holy Ghost
The Baptism of the Holy Ghost
Jesus baptizes with the Holy
Ghost
Key Scriptures:
“Matthew 3:11-12, John 14:15-17; 26” and “Acts 2:38-39*”.
Transition: The Book of Acts is the
second volume of the Gospel of Luke.
Both books were addressed to Theophilus (“lover of God”) and was written
by Luke, “the beloved physician” (Col. 4:14), a disciple of Jesus Christ and a
faithful companion of Paul during his ministry.
The ministry of Jesus is the foundation of the
results obtained in the Spirit-filled witnesses. Jesus’ ministry in the Book of Acts is carried
on through His disciples by the Holy Spirit.
The promise of the Holy Spirit is fulfilled in the Book of Acts and the
Great Commission begins in Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria and expands to the
great city of Rome. (The promise of the
Holy Spirit continues in the lives of believers today.)
Luke also provides unity between the Apostles’
labors after the ascension of Christ and Jesus’ works in the gospels. The Book of Acts gives us the basis of universal
doctrinal truth: Jesus is universal, he
is Lord of ALL: every person, every race, male and female; he has promised us a
comforter if we love him. We must love,
believe, repent, and receive, then be led by the Holy Spirit to become sons and
daughters of God.
The basic pattern of conversion is shown in
the Book of Acts: Repentance, forgiveness,
water baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost.
The book focuses on the acts of two apostles, primarily: Peter and Paul
and shows the continuation of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach
(Acts. 1:1).
Jesus continues his
ministry after his resurrection speaking of The Promise of the Comforter
Acts 1:1-9 King
James Version (KJV)
1 The
former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do
and teach,
2 Until
the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given
commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: (Holy Ghost gives commandments)
3 To
whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs,
being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the
kingdom of God:
4 And,
being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart
from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days
hence.
6 When
they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou
at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And
he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times
or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power,
after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto
me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the
uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was
taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
The Holy Ghost comes to give us:
- Commandments
- Power
- Enable us to be witnesses of Jesus
If
you haven’t received the Holy Ghost, don’t you want to receive him? He is sent to bless you. Without him you can
never see the kingdom of God. We need
him to be able to serve the Lord. If you
have received him, let him perfect all that is lacking in you.
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the
world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye
know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
He dwells in you, he
lives inside of you.
But when the Comforter is
come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of
truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of
me:
He comes from the
Father. He is your gift from the Father:
If ye then, being evil, know how to
give good gifts unto your children: how much more
shall your heavenly Father give the Holy
Spirit to them that ask him?
Repent
and ask him for his Holy Spirit.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he
shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he
speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He will guide you into
all truth. He speaks the word of God
that he hears from Jesus, Jesus hears from God the Father.
The Promise Fulfilled: Jesus always keeps his promises.
Acts 1:12-14; Acts 2:1-4
Acts 1:12-14
(KJV)
12 Then
returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from
Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13 And
when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both
Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and
Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of
James.
14 These
all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and
Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Acts
2:1-4(KJV)
2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all
with one accord in one place.
2 And
suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And
there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each
of them.
4 And
they were
all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance.
The “day of Pentecost” is not a religion or
denomination.
Pentecost:
pentekostos, an adjective denoting
“fiftieth,” is used as a noun, with “day” understood, i.e., the “fiftieth”
day after the Passover, counting from the second day of the Feast, Acts
2:1; 20:16; I Cor. 16:8.
For divine instructions to Israel see Exodus
23:16; 34:22; Leviticus 23:15-21; Numbers 28:26-31; Deuteronomy 16:9-11. (Vines)
The Holy Spirit has always been at work in the
world. In the Old Testament, the Holy
Spirit came upon man. Today, Jesus
promises to take his abode within you, which is the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost
dwelling inside you. To be filled with
the Holy Ghost: Image an 8 oz. drinking glass, to fill it you pour something
into the glass: milk, juice, water, etc.
The glass is filled with the milk, juice, water. The glass is the container that is being used
to pour the substance into. You are like the glass and the Holy Spirit like the
liquid that is being poured into the glass.
Acts 2:3-4 gives us an account of the fulfillment of the
Promise of the Holy Ghost. There
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire and it sat upon each on them. This is the best description Luke could give.
And they were “all” filled
with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave
them utterance. Now, read carefully, it
said, “as the Spirit gave then utterance”.
They were not receiving lessons on how to talk in tongues; the Holy
Spirit gave them the utterance. This is the only document incident, where there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire that sat upon each of them. When the Holy Spirit comes inside of you, he speaks.
He speaks in tongues which is a spiritual language. In this original outpouring of the Holy
Ghost, He spoke in the language of other languages. (Acts 2:1-11) (Well learn more about the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues as we
continue this study.)
After Jesus resurrection, Jesus told his disciples, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;”…Mark 16:17. ***** For
those of you that don’t believe in speaking in tongues, Jesus clearly states
these signs shall follow them that believe.
So, if you believe, you shall speak with new tongues. (Later in the
study, we will learn the purpose of speaking in tongues, it will bless you.)
Mark
16:14-18King James Version (KJV)
14 Afterward
he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their
unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen
him after he was risen.
15 And
he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They
shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt
them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Jesus
gives these instructions for believers and nonbelievers:
- God into the entire world and preach the gospel to every creature.
- He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. (more on what it means to "believe" in a different bible study)
- He that believeth not shall be damned.
- These signs shall follow them that believe:
- In Jesus name they shall cast out devils
- They shall speak with new tongues*
- The shall take up serpents
- If they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them
- They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover
Review:
Jesus
promised if he went heaven, he would send us a comforter, the Spirit of Truth,
to lead and guide us and dwell in us. His promise was fulfilled on Pentecost.
His promise is still being fulfilled today in the lives of the believers. If you do not have God’s spirit you do not
belong to him. But, you can belong to
him, repent of your sins, be baptized in Jesus name, and receive the Holy
Ghost. As a believer you will be endowed
with power from on high, and you will speak with new tongues. The Power of the
Holy Ghost enables you to become sons and daughters of God.
