The Perseverance of Our Faith Part IV of VII Bible Study

The Perseverance of Our Faith Part IV of VII

Scripture Reading:

Hebrews 10:26-34

Hebrews10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

Hebrews10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth(the word), there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, (Jesus was our sacrifice for our sins)

In this passage of scripture, the common on-going issue of sin is addressed in the life of the believer.  (Sin willfully, meaning deliberate, intentional.)  This is the nature of sin or sin nature.  However, when you are born again of the water and the Spirit, you take on a new nature: the sinless nature of Christ. (John 3:1-8)

Romans 6:1  (Study the entire Chapter 6 of Romans)  (KJV)

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  God forbid…..

So many Christians are misinformed on the Grace of God, Grace is God’s mercy.  It is not a license to sin.  God’s grace, his mercy will not abound if you continue to sin.  On your own, you cannot stop sinning, only by the Power of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit are you given power to become sons of God.  The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth; he will lead and guide you if you let him. When you submit to the Spirit you cannot fulfill the sin of the flesh.

Many of us have experienced our parent’s mercy when we’ve disobeyed them.  But the time does come when a parent decides enough is enough and now judgment must be administered to the disobedient child: punishment.  God is the same way, if we continuous disobey him without repenting, judgment is pronounced against us. We will suffer the consequences of continuing in sin. (Hebrews 12:7-9)  We want to thank God when he corrects us for this is true love.

Hebrews 12:7-9  King James Version (KJV)

If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

…. knowledge of the truth(the word),

1 Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

After we receive the knowledge of the truth, which is the word of God.  We are to apply the truth (word) to our lives.  This is where we become a doer of the word, not a hearer only.  James 1:21-22  We are to strive to enter into the strait gate which will lead us to eternal life with Christ. As Christians, after receiving the Holy Ghost it is just the beginning, it is the power to become sons of God. John 1:11-13  After receiving the power we must strive to enter into the kingdom.

Matthew 7:13-14

King James Version (KJV)

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Luke 13:23-35

King James Version (KJV)

23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

So, how do we strive to enter in?  One answer is found in: Romans 12:1-2

Scriptures to Consider:
John 5:39
II Timothy 2:15
II Timothy 3:16-17
Ezekiel 18:4
Hebrews 12:1-2
Matthew 24:13
II Corinthians 10:3-6

…there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

Hebrews 9:26-28

King James Version (KJV)

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Hebrews 2:17  King James Version (KJV)

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

We thank God the Father for giving us his Son, Jesus Christ for our sins. We do not want to frustrate the Grace of God by continuing to sin.  Allow the Holy Spirit to perfect all that is lacking in you.

Jesus told Nicodemus, ruler of the Jews: Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh (sin nature); and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (Holy Spirit: nature of Christ).  John 3:1-8

Romans 8:13-14  King James Version (KJV)

13 For if ye live after the flesh (sin nature), ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify (kill) the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 8:5-10

King James Version (KJV)

For they that are after the flesh (sin nature) do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

For to be carnally minded (sin nature) is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Because of the gift of the Holy Ghost, our comforter, when we are born of the water and the Spirit; we can submit ourselves to the spirit and put on Christ. For we clearly see in Romans chapter 8 we must be led by the Spirit of God, only if we have his Spirit dwelling in us do we belong to God. God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

  1. John 4:24

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

As we worship the Lord with our life, not just in Church praise and worship service, we are to worship as a true worshipper in Spirit and in Truth. The word of God is sent to be “Life’s Instruction Manual”.

John 4:23-24  (KJV)

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Hebrews 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Whoever rejects the sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins will receive judgment with fiery indignation because you are an enemy of the cross of Christ.  Unbelievers are God’s adversaries.  This scripture should motive the believer and unbeliever to take the consequence of sin seriously.   Deuteronomy 17:2-7 reminds us of the harsh judgment under the Law of Moses. We must remember if you profess Christianity, people are observing your life, so we do not live just for self.  Just as Christ lived for us, we too are to live a righteous life before others that they may see our good works and glorify our heavenly Father.  In the OT, when people sinned it was a threat to the purity and integrity of the nation of Israel, who were God’s covenant people.  Jesus has made a covenant with us and we are to represent Christ to all people. For further study: Leviticus 20:9-16. Verse 29 emphases if you reject the sacrificial death of Jesus and his sanctification, and the Spirit of Grace, your judgment will be even harsher.  (“Hath done despite “translates in the Greek to express outrage at how ungrateful people are for God’s work in Christ.

Hebrews 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

The severity and certainty of God’s judgment is expressed in these scriptures just like verses 27-29.  Matthew 11:20-24 Jesus gave us revelation of a greater judgment and emphasized in Luke 12:48.  We must be careful to remember, God’s divine character mandates holiness, righteousness, and justice.  Jesus came that we can have eternal life and escape eternal damnation.  God shall judge his people, judgment will begin at the house of God, so where will the sinner and ungodly appear?  God’s final judgment will result in a verdict of “eternal life” or “eternal death” in the life of the believer and unbeliever.  What will his verdict be in your life?

Hebrews 10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

Call to remembrance the former days, every one endures afflictions and reproaches if ye serve the Lord Christ.  Paul was actually in prisoned for the Gospel and that time is returning soon, where Christians will also be placed in prison for his sake. Jesus told us in this life we shall have tribulation and we are blessed when we endure tribulation. Promise: But he that endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:13;James 1:12; Study Matthew 24.

Scripture Reading:

Hebrews 10:35-37

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
