The Baptism of the Holy Ghost
Jesus baptizes with the Holy
Ghost
Key Scriptures:
“Matthew 3:11-12, John 14:15-17; 26” and “Acts 2:38-39*”.
Acts 2:3-4 gives us an account of the
fulfillment of the Promise of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit/Comforter. There appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire and it sat upon each on them. This is the best description Luke could give.
And they were “all” filled with the
Holy Ghost and began
to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now, read carefully, it said, “as the Spirit gave them utterance”. They were not receiving lessons on how to
talk in tongues; the Holy Spirit gave them the utterance. This is the only
documented incident, where there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of
fire that sat upon each of them. When
the Holy Spirit comes inside of you, he speaks. He speaks in tongues which is a
spiritual language, which we cannot understand, unless God gives the
interpretation. In this original
outpouring of the Holy Ghost, He (Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit) spoke in the language
of other languages.
The outward
baptism is water baptism. The inward
baptism is being filled/baptized with the Holy Ghost. Just as Jesus said he and the Father will make
their abode in us (John 14:23), this is done through the Spirit which we
previously learned in John 14:16-17: the Father shall give us a Comforter (The
Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit), that he may abide (remain) with us forever, he dwells
in us and shall be in us
(KJV).

suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting.

there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each
of them.
4 And
they were
all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance.
The promise that John the Baptist and Jesus spoke of is
now fulfilled and it is continuing to be fulfilled in the lives of believers
today. John the Baptist said in Matthew
3:11 – 12: I (John) indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that
cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,
and with fire (hell): Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge
his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff
with unquenchable fire. And Jesus said, “Acts
1:5, 7-8, that he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and after the Holy
Ghost comes you shall receive power and you shall be witnesses of Jesus.
Lesson:
When Jesus began his ministry Matthew 4:17,” From that
time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent:
for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Repentance,
water baptism, and being baptized in the Holy Ghost all go together. (Refer to bible study on repentance and water
baptism: John the Baptist preached repentance.) In Acts chapter 2, when the
when the 120 were filled with the Holy Ghost (vs. 4), there were dwelling at
Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was
noised abroad… they were all amazed and marveled at the wonderful works of God,
Acts 2:4-13. Some people thought, the
120 were full of new wine and Peter addressed them in verses 14-36. Peter reminded them of the prophet Joel who prophesied
about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and Jesus of Nazareth, telling them the
people were not filled with wine, but
were filled with the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit as prophesied by the prophet Joel,
John the Baptist, and Jesus.

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see

Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
19 And
I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and
fire, and vapour of smoke:
20 The
sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great
and notable day of the Lord come:
21 And
it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall
be saved.
22 Ye
men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth,
a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God
did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
23 Him,
being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have
taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
24 Whom
God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not
possible that he should be holden of it.
25 For
David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he
is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
26 Therefore
did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest
in hope:
27 Because
thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to
see corruption.
28 Thou
hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy
countenance.
29 Men
and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is
both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
30 Therefore
being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of
the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit
on his throne;
31 He
seeing this before spake of the resurrection of
Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see
corruption.
32 This
Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are
witnesses.
33 Therefore
being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the
promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see
and hear. (What did they see and hear?)
34 For
David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said
unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
35 Until
I make thy foes thy footstool.
36 Therefore
let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus,
whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and
said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall
we do?
After
Peter made this great declaration of the fulfillment of scripture: The people being
pricked (convicted) in their heart, ask Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men
and brethren, what shall we do? Acts 2:38-39

Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the
Holy Ghost. (Repent, be water baptized, and the promise: ye shall

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your
children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. (Who
is the promise for?)
Remember,
John the Baptist came preaching repent:
Matthew 3:1-12 and Jesus also preached, repent:
Matthew 4:17. Remember the question that was asked, “What shall we do?” And Peter said, “Repent” and be baptized every
one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, that’s a promise. It is a conditional promise:
if you repent. You cannot
receive the Comforter without repenting. You must be baptized of the water and
of the Spirit.
Acts 2:40-42

with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from
this untoward generation.
41 Then
they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were
added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And
they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in
breaking of bread, and in prayers.
It is my firm belief, in verse 41, “Then they that gladly
received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them
about three thousand souls, this was the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Water baptism is still required. Baptism is two-fold: water and spirit, which
equal One. Just like the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost which equal
ONE. You must be born of the water and
of the Spirit: John 3:5. Remember baptism is symbolic of death, the natural
man dies, and the spiritual man rises. It’s the same in the Spiritual: baptism
of the Holy Ghost. The Spirit of the old
man dies, and the Spirit of Christ lives in you.

answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus
saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second
time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus
answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of
the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel
not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
When we receive power to become sons and daughters of
God, that power as we previously learned comes through the Spirit of Truth
which is the Holy Ghost. In our next
lesson, we will examine, receiving the Holy Ghost with the evidence of Speaking
in Tongues, which Jesus said, Speaking in
Tongues is one of the signs that will follow a believer: Mark 16:17: “And
these signs shall follow then that believe; …they shall speak with new tongues;…”.
As you go through this bible study and any bible study,
always pray and ask God to lead and guide you through the study. Ask God to
give you an understanding. You will not agree with everything written, taught
or preached by any particular person, but you must agree with the word.
Study to shew thyself approved unto
God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word
of truth.
Search the scriptures; for in them ye
think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of
me.
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in
that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched
the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
But be ye doers of the word, and
not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
