Part VII: The Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost

Conclusion of the Purpose of the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost

We are concluding our introductory study on the “Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit.”  I encourage you to continue to study this subject.  The purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit is vital to your salvation and eternal life.

Let’s highlight what we’ve learned from this study:

No one can live the Christian life on their own.  That’s why we need to receive the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost. He is our Comforter.  He gives us Power to become Sons and Daughters of God.  He prays for us.  He is the third person of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Without the Holy Ghost, we can’t serve God.

Romans 8:9 (KJV)

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Comforter in the Greek is parakletos which literally means “one called alongside to help.” He is a gift from Jesus to help you in your Christian walk.

The Holy Ghost comes to give us:

  • Commandments
  • Power
  • Enable us to be witnesses of Jesus
  • To guide us in all truth

Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit:

  • The Holy Ghost is our Comforter
  • The Comforter is Jesus
  • The Holy Ghost dwells in you *
  • The Comforter is a Teacher
  • The Comforter is our Helper
  • The Comforter is Power
  • The Comforter is a Spirit

We are to:

  • Walk in the Spirit
  • Pray in the Spirit
  • Sing in the Spirit
  • Obey the Spirit
  • Worship in the Spirit

Remember Jesus said one of the signs of a believer is speaking with new tongues.  We will learn about the purpose of speaking in tongues.

·        Mark 16:15-18 King James Version (KJV)

  • 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
  • 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
  • 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name (Jesus) shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
  • 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Acts 2:1-4 King James Version (KJV)

1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Jesus makes the signs of a believer very clear Mark 16:16-18:

  • Ability to cast out devils
  • Speaking in new tongues
  • Taking up serpents
  • Not hurt if drinking any deadly thing (this does not mean to tempt God, by drinking some poison)
  • Ability to lay hands on the sick and they recover

Acts 2:4

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:45-47 (KJV)

  • 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
  • 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

What is the purpose of speaking in tongues?

1 Corinthians 14 (KJV)

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

History of the Holy Spirit

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

What does the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit do in our life today?

The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost are equal in nature, but their relationship and role are distinct.  The Father is willing, the Son is accomplishing the will of the Father, and the Holy Spirit applies the work of the Son.  The Holy Spirit always glorifies Christ.

Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit Purpose in our life today?

  1. The Holy Spirit Comforts
    1. Read John 12:27; 14:16, 26; 15:26, 16:7
  2. The Holy Spirit gives us instructions
    1. Acts 16:6-7
  3. The Holy Spirit teaches us how to pray and searches our hearts
    1. Romans 8:26-27*
  4. The Holy Spirit is a teacher
    1. I Corinthians 2:12-16; John 14:26
  5. The Holy Spirit is grieved by sin, just like God the Father
    1. Ephesians 4:20-32
  6. The Holy Spirit gives assurance you belong to Christ
    1. Romans 8:9-17   (Chapter 8 of Romans is a chapter of, “Life in the Spirit”.  Study this chapter well.  Are you lining up with the word? Is the Spirit inside of you?  Do you walk in the Spirit?

Attributes of the Holy Spirit

  • He is Holy:  Romans 1:1-7
  • He is Eternal: Hebrew 8:8-14 ( He purges our conscience)
  • He is Omnipresent: Psalm 139:7-10
  • He is Omniscient:  I Corinthians 2:6-16
  • He is Omnipotent:  Luke 1:30-38 (He brings blessings)

Gifts of the Spirit

Spiritual gifts in the Greek pneumatikon “spiritual”, always connotes the ideas of power and of invisibility.  It is an after-Pentecost word, which originated with God: His character and His law (Romans 7:14).

Review 1 Corinthians 12 (KJV)

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. (Did you realize you cannot say, “Jesus is Lord”, but by the Holy Ghost.  As we previously learned, you must be born again, of the water and of the spirit. That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.  A true worshiper can only worship in Spirit and in truth, without the Spirit abiding in you, you cannot say Jesus is your Lord nor can you worship him.)

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. (God gives a variety of gifts through the Holy Spirit, he gives different administrations through Jesus Christ and there are divers (many) operations that all come from the one and only true God.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.*

Read verses 8 -31

God has placed in the church each of these offices to edify the church.  This is how God’s church is set up; does your church operate in the above gifts?  If not, some changes need to take place, if you are part of the body of Christ.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

Fruit of the Spirit

The power that we are endued with upon receiving the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit will yield good fruit.  The good fruit is the Fruit of the Spirit which is obtained by faith through Christ Jesus.  Remember, the Holy Spirit is the Comforter and he is the Spirit of Truth.  When he dwells in you, the manifestation of Christ in your life will be evident by the fruit that you bear.  Your life will reflect the life of Christ.

In the life of a believer, the fruit is the product/result of the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Galatians 5:22-26 (KJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Love is the Core or Center of the Fruit of the Spirit

Love:  love is the sacrificial will to give oneself for another

    1. I Corinthians 13 gives an excellent description of love
    2. Jesus said and demonstrated: There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friend: John 15:13 and we are also commanded to love our enemies: Matthew 5:44.

  • Love is not a feeling, it is an action.
    • For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten Son.
    • Christ loved us he laid down his life.
    • Jonathan loved David as his own soul, he risk his life for him as his friend.
    • We show God we love him when we keep his commandments.
    • We are commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves

Galatians 5

13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

I pray this introductory study of the, “Purpose of the Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit” has opened your understanding of his purpose in your life. Remember, if you do not have the Spirit of God dwelling in you, you do not belong to him.  Good News:  You can receive his Spirit, that’s why Jesus went away, so he could send you a comforter (Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit), who is the Spirit of Truth.  You must be born again, of the water and the Spirit.  You must walk in the Spirit, bringing forth good fruit.

Father God, we thank you for offering your son as a sacrificial lamb for our salvation. Thank you Lord Jesus, for sending the comforter to dwell within us and to give us power to become Sons and Daughters of God.  We thank you for the Holy Ghost and his purpose in our life.  We thank you for repentance and remission of sins and your plan of salvation. Father I pray for those who have not received your Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost, to receive your powerful spirit.  I also pray for those that have received your Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost, that they will allow him to lead and guide them into all truth and righteousness that they will bring forth good fruit. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
